Courses - Elementary
Spanish
The primary goal of world language instruction is to enable students to communicate effectively in the target language.  Students will be able to use the language they have studied in meaningful ways because they experience the language in authentic situations.  The focus is on what the students can do with the language rather than what they know about it.  Thus, the development of conversational skills takes precedence over other communication skills.  Culture is also an integral part of world language learning.  Connecting language and communication skills with culture creates a more powerful learning experience for students.

In the elementary schools, students learn Spanish. The program consists of two periods of instruction per week for students in Grades 1-5.  In Grades 1 and 2, students have one period per week with a Spanish teacher and one period per week of instruction with their regular classroom teacher through video-based instruction.  In Grades 3-5, students have two periods per week with a Spanish teacher.  The curriculum is thematically based and aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.
