Elementary Courses

Music
All elementary students have one general music class per week during which they experience and develop the following interrelated skills: listening, music, reading, moving to music and singing. Students in Grades 1- 2 have one period per week of general music instruction. Students in Grade 3 have one semester of required instruction in strings and may elect to take an additional semester of strings instruction. In Grades 4 and 5 students may continue string instrument instruction in small group lessons one period per week and play in the school orchestra. Students in Grade 5 may begin instruction on woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in small group lessons one period per week and play in the school band. Students in Grades 4 and 5 may also participate in one chorus class per week.
Art
Art education focuses on visual experiences. Students are given step-by-step instruction in basic concepts to better understand, create and appreciate art. Art instruction is a discipline that encourages exploration, creativity and self-expression. It is organized to reflect student growth and development. All students in Grades 1-5 have one period of art instruction each week.
