Elementary Courses

Language Arts
The K-5 Language Arts curriculum is consistent with a Balanced Literacy Approach. The intent of this process is to provide all of our students with an integrated reading and writing experience by making available a variety of quality authentic literature. Through this method, students will be asked to connect reading to writing and use both as tools to foster success across the entire curriculum. Because of the developmental differences in learners, the district is committed to providing a classroom model that includes both whole class and small group instruction

This approach includes each of the following methods within the classroom:

  • Read Alouds
  • Shared Reading and Writing
  • Guided Reading and Writing
  • Independent Reading and Writing
  • Literature Study
  • Word Study

Our students are closely monitored and assessed on their progress as readers and writers. There are various modes of assessment (formal and informal) implemented in our classrooms. The data collected in these on-going assessments will assist the classroom teacher in making highly informed instructional decisions to meet the educational needs of individual learners.

Grammar, study skills and handwriting play an important role as students learn and develop the language skills necessary to become proficient readers and writers. To this end, students are given frequent and varied opportunities to engage in learning activities focused on the development of listening and speaking skills.

Materials
A variety of rich and authentic literature is available to our students. Each elementary school is outfitted with a Scholastic Leveled Library, which consists of over 500 titles ranging from K to 7th grade reading levels
