Dan Umstead
Dan Umstead has served as principal of Toll Gate Grammar School since 2007.

He came to Hopewell Valley from the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District, where he had been assistant principal of the Dutch Neck Elementary School in Princeton Junction. While at Dutch Neck, a K-3 school with a population more than double that of Toll Gate’s, he also served as the test coordinator for the district’s six elementary schools.

A Philadelphia native, Umstead began his career there, in the city’s public schools, teaching pre-1st, 3rd and 5th grades at the George Clymer School. In 1996 he was hired by West Windsor-Plainsboro and, over the next five years, taught 4th grade at the district’s Village and Upper Elementary, now known as Millstone River, schools. From 2001 until 2003 he served as the district’s elementary science supervisor.

Umstead has a master’s degree in educational administration from Rider University and a bachelor’s degree in elementary and kindergarten education from Penn State University.

He lives in Yardley with his wife, Erica, an adjunct professor in the education department at Rider, and two daughters.
