Richard Lang has served as assistant superintendent since 2007. He directs the office of human resources and supervises the information technology department and school safety operations.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Mr. Lang began his career in his hometown, teaching Latin and English at Sayre Junior High School. He taught French and Spanish in the Pennsbury School District in suburban Levittown and in the New Jersey districts of Haddonfield and Millburn. While in Haddonfield he was selected as a Fulbright exchange teacher and taught French for a year to middle school students in Bristol, England. He also served briefly as an exchange teacher in Bordeaux, France. In Millburn, he accompanied students on an exchange visit to Venezuela.
In 1983 he joined the staff at Central High School as world language supervisor. In that position, he helped launched the school’s French exchange program which continues to this day. In 1995 he was promoted to vice principal and held that position until 2002, serving at a time of substantial enrollment growth and program and facility expansion.
Mr. Lang was named Hopewell Valley’s director of human resources in 2002, heading up staff recruitment and support services for the following five years. When he was promoted to assistant superintendent in 2007, he retained the responsibilities of human resources director.
As the district’s second highest ranking administrator, Mr. Lang also serves as the administration’s chief liaison to key community organizations, including the Hopewell Valley Municipal Alliance and the Healthy Communities, Healthy Youth initiative’s School Sector. He represents the district in CJ Pride, a consortium of area school districts committed to the recruitment of a more diversified workforce. For many years he has also served as the administrative liaison to the Board of Education’s personnel committee and has been heavily involved in multiple labor contract negotiations.
Mr. Lang holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Millersville State University and a master’s degree in French from McGill University. He is married and has four sons.
