Referenda

DECEMBER 2008

On February 11, 2008, upon the recommendation of Superintendent Judith Ferguson, the Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education created an ad hoc committee to conduct research for a future referendum which was to focus on “green” initiatives. The Board outlined the charge as follows:

  • To advise the Board of projects that would be included in a referendum with brief rationale for each.
  • To estimate the cost for each project andthe total costs for the referendum.

The Board of Education on January 12, 2009, agreed to postpone a referendum for capital projects, citing the weak economy and a concern for a taxpayer base already shouldering more than 92 percent of the district’s expenses.

SEPTEMBER 2004

A referendum covering a list of items with an estimated cost of $15.5 million was approved on September 28, 2004. Voters were asked to okay funding for 10 new classrooms at Timberlane Middle School, district-wide technology upgrades, roof and drainage repairs at several school buildings, new music and pre-engineering courses at Central High School, and other items.

MARCH 2002

Known as the Back Timberlane referendum, funding for this project was defeated on March 12, 2002. This would have provided $1,860,000 in addition to $910,000 pledged for additional athletic fields for curricular, extra-curricular and community use. This also would have provided a recreational/recess area and equipment for students at Timberlane Middle School.

OCTOBER 2000

The Hopewell Valley Regional School District passed a public referendum on October 17, 2000, to build a new elementary school and to expand and renovate Bear Tavern Elementary and Central High School for $29,734,000.
